I had the opportunity to attend an excellent workshop at Caltech focused on utilizing atmospheric observations and modeling to estimate greenhouse gas fluxes. A potential application of this technology in the carbon market is its use in verifying emissions reductions at the smoke stack level from carbon capture and storage. This technology could become a powerful tool for digital MRV in the carbon market in the future.

Scaling Nature-Based Climate Solutions
Nature-based climate solutions (NbS), such as forest conservation and restoration, offer a promising approach to mitigate the effects of global climate change, conserve biodiversity, and enhance rural livelihoods. By either reducing emissions or by sequestering extra carbon in terrestrial ecosystems, forest conservation and restoration can yield substantial co-benefits for biodiversity and ecosystem services and is often a no-regret investment. However, the effectiveness of NbS may be undermined by the “additionality”, “leakage” and “impermanence” issues, unless properly addressed. Recent concerns about the integrity of forest carbon projects caused their share of the voluntary market to decline from 40% in 2021 to 30% in 2022. This session focuses on advances in carbon credit quantification methods, and empirical characterization of co-benefits, to improve the credibility of NbS. We invite submissions on:
(1) advances in MRV of NbS using remote sensing and in-situ observations.
(2) advances in projections of carbon sequestration potential of NbS

I am attending and giving an oral presentation, "Tree cover gain in the moist tropics: The importance of distinguishing natural forest regrowth from managed tree systems", in the Third International Negative Emission Conference held at the University of Oxford. This is one of the best conferences that I have attended. You meet the same people everyday and got chances to talk with them. I highly recommend the next carbon removal conference in two years at IIASA.

Students from around the world are invited to participate in the Student Monitoring and Reporting Technology for Carbon Dioxide Removal (SMART-CDR) Competition. The competition brings international teams of students together to design and develop creative solutions that advance the state of monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) approaches, while giving students the opportunity to network internationally and receive mentorship from leading experts in the field.
Finalists will have the opportunity to present their idea in-person at the international CDR Conference at the CLIMIT Summit in Norway (25-27 February 2025), where up to three winning teams will be awarded USD $10,000 cash prizes.
The Competition is brought to you by CDR Mission members: the United States, Canada, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Austria, Japan, Norway, and the United Kingdom.

On May 28, the Biden Administration announced new principles for high-integrity carbon credits.

“There are credible estimates that the voluntary carbon market could grow to 10 or 20 times what it is today, and then you’d be talking about real money to tackle climate change,” said Nat Keohane, president of the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, an environmental group that supports the use of carbon offsets.

Twenty-four Semifinalists Selected for DOE Historic Carbon Dioxide Removal Purchase Prize Will Create a Just and Sustainable Framework for Scalable Carbon Management and Help Develop a Carbon Dioxide Purchasing Market to Encourage Technology Innovation.

Direct air capture with storage: nine projects focus on processes or technologies that capture CO2 directly from the atmosphere for permanent storage underground or in long-lived products;

Biomass with carbon removal and storage: seven projects use plants and algae to remove CO2 from the atmosphere for permanent storage underground or in long-lived products;
-
Enhanced rock weathering and mineralization: five projects remove CO2 through reaction with alkaline materials such as calcium- or magnesium-rich crushed rocks; and
-
Planned or managed carbon sinks: three projects focus on natural and artificial approaches in terrestrial and upper hydrosphere environments with demonstrable durable storage consistent with secure geologic storage or equivalent.

The Berkeley Carbon Trading Project is excited to release version 11 of the Voluntary Registry Offsets Database, with data through March 31, 2024.

Diving into the data, so far in 2024 we see the following additions to the registries:

317 new projects

The most common new project types are Cookstoves (68 projects mainly across Sub Saharan Africa and South Asia), Improved Forest Management (48 projects, mostly in Mexico and United States), and Afforestation/reforestation (36 projects).

62,741,242 newly issued credits (each representing 1 tonne of CO2-equivalent reduced or removed)

Cookstoves were issued the most credits (23.9% of total) followed by Wind (13.9%), Improved Forest Management (12.5%), and Leak Detection & Repair in Gas Systems (8.0%).

51,297,790 credits retired

The most retired credits were REDD+ (32.6% of total) followed by Wind, Cookstoves, Centralized Solar, and Hydropower.

Sweden registered its first project (Improved Forest Management).

New project types were added to the database; Lower Carbon Cement and Concrete (2 projects), Waste Reduction (1 project), and Carbon Mineralization (1 project).

NASA has selected four proposals for concept studies of missions to help us better understand Earth science key focus areas for the benefit of all including greenhouse gases, the ozone layer, ocean surface currents, and changes in ice and glaciers around the world.

The Stratosphere Troposphere Response using Infrared Vertically-Resolved Light Explorer (STRIVE)
This mission would provide daily, near-global, high-resolution measurements of temperature, a variety of atmospheric elements, and aerosol properties from the upper troposphere to the mesosphere – at a much higher spatial density than any previous mission. It would also measure vertical profiles of ozone and trace gasses needed to monitor and understand the recovery of the ozone layer – another identified NASA Earth sciences target. The proposal is led by Lyatt Jaegle at the University of Washington in Seattle. -
The Ocean Dynamics and Surface Exchange with the Atmosphere (ODYSEA)
This satellite would simultaneously measure ocean surface currents and winds to improve our understanding of air-sea interactions and surface current processes that impact weather, climate, marine ecosystems, and human wellbeing. It aims to provide updated ocean wind data in less than three hours and ocean current data in less than six hours. The proposal is led by Sarah Gille at the University of California in San Diego. -
Earth Dynamics Geodetic Explorer (EDGE)
This mission would observe the three-dimensional structure of terrestrial ecosystems and the surface topography of glaciers, ice sheets, and sea ice as they are changing in response to climate and human activity. The mission would provide a continuation of such measurements that are currently measured from space by ICESat-2 and GEDI (Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation). The proposal is led by Helen Amanda Fricker at the University of California in San Diego. -
The Carbon Investigation (Carbon-I)
This investigation would enable simultaneous, multi-species measurements of critical greenhouse gases and potential quantification of ethane – which could help study processes that drive natural and anthropogenic emissions. The mission would provide unprecedented spatial resolution and global coverage that would help us better understand the carbon cycle and the global methane budget. The proposal is led by Christian Frankenberg at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.
